DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL AND HISTORICAL GEOLOGY

The Departmet of “General and historical geology” was created in the result of combination of two departments: The department of General geology and The department of Paleontology and historical geology.

The department of «General geology» was created on the basis of biological faculty in 1934 of the Azerbaijan State University. Throughout many years chief of the department were prof. A.G.Azizov, аcad. S.F.Mehtiev, prof. S.M.Suleymanov, prof. S.S.Samedov, ass.prof. A.A.Masimov. Per 2003 decition of Academic council of BSU, the department of «general geology» separated from geology and hydrogeology and began to operate as independent department.
At present the chief of the department is the doctor of geologo-mineralogical sciences, prof. S.S.Samedov. Students-bachelors come courses of “the general geology”, "geomorphology", “geology with geomorphology bases” “stratigraphy” "geoecology" «application of mathematical methods in geoecology». Students the master courses on specialities «environmental problems in geology». Post graduade students of the department come prepare on a speciality 25.00.01 «the general and regional geology on scientifical-pedagogical staffs».

The department of Paleontology and historical geology was created in 1952 under the initiative of the president of the Academy of sciences Azerbaijan, academician Musa Mirza oglu Aliev who managed the department till 1958. For years a management of the department academician M.M.Aliev on the personal means created the Museum of Paleontology where from all paleontologic museums of Soviet Union brought valuable paleontologic exhibits. The museum of paleontology also is the evident manual for effective carrying out of practical works on paleontology for students and carrying out of research works till now. These years - prof. K.M.Sultanov, F.S.Ahmedbeyli, Dj. M.Halilov, etc. had been issued textbooks "Paleontology" and « Geology of the USSR », and also actual research works were carried out. In 1952 S.S.Samedov became the post-graduate student of faculty.
Since 1959 and up to the end of the life academician M.M.Aliev was the deputy director of Institute Geology and Development of Combustible Minerals created at АН the USSR and the Ministry of the Petroleum industry of the USSR. Simultaneously he was director created by him at institute of laboratory « Biostratigraphy of oil-and-gas areas ». Within all these years academician M.M.Aliev did not interrupt scientific connections with the department created by him « Paleontology and historical geology ».
Per 1967-1971 academician M.M.Aliev was the head of the large oil contract in the Algerian republic. In creation of geological maps and calculation of stocks of oil and gas of the Algerian Sahara and mountains Atlasskih he also involved also the Azerbaijan geologists.
Per 1958-1991 over the department the member the correspondent of the Academy of sciences of Republic prof supervised. K.M.Sultanov, and 1991-2008 supervised over faculty prof. V.B.Agaev. At present ass. prof. B.H.Galandarov manage the department.
During all these years on faculty the special attention was given on preparation of the highly skilled scientific and pedagogical staff.
Per 1960-1970 on faculty the group of young perspective employees, in person V.B.Agaeva, has been involved with S.A.Isaeva, G.M.Gusejnova, N.M.Gasymova, S.D.Mamedova, O.A.Kerimova. For these years on faculty with success have been protected a little candidate and theses for a doctor's degree. As monographies, textbooks and manuals have been printed.
In 1961 prof. K.M.Sultanov has been issued «the Paleontologic dictionary », and in 1964 ass. has been translated to the Azerbaijan language G.I.Leonova's textbook « Historical geology » by prof. S.S.Samedov which till today students use.

EDUCATION

By employees of faculty it is conducted employment in all 4 specialities on a bachelor degree and experts on a magistracy on specialization ТМ 010008 Geology, searches and an estimation of deposits of a sea and oceanic bottom prepare.

SCIENTIFIC WORK

3 research works (2009-2011) on a theme « Stratigraphy and geodynamics of the Azerbaijan part of Caspian sea » are carried out at the faculty.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES

Educational programmes of subjects readable on faculty on a bachelor degree and a magistracy have come out of press.

2. Employees of faculty write textbooks "Paleontology" and « Historical geology » and all documents will be covered in the Ministry of Education of the Azerbaijan Republic for reception of the sanction to editions of textbooks.
